BRAZA - SOUTH AFRICA’S FAVOURITE
PORTUGUESE DINING EXPERIENCE

Braza, the restaurant chain that is redolent of Portugal, Brazil, Moçambique and Angola, is now in its 4th successful year.

Braza is based on the adventurous nature of the cultures, tastes and flavours that were discovered by Portuguese explorers.

Braza personifies those explorers in the identity of Manuel, whose ceaseless and bold journeys take him in search of new flavours. Those he enjoys, he brings home for all to share.

The superb food is one of the secrets that make Braza the most exciting restaurant chain this country has seen. Another is the giant Moçambique flame grill that features at the centre of every Braza restaurant. In fact, it is the grill that lends the restaurants their unusual name; ‘braza’ is the Portuguese word for fire, and the grill is the centre around which Braza revolves.

Each Braza restaurant reflects the warmth and hospitality of the Portuguese culture and replicates typical Portuguese kitchens, with its solid wooden tables, rich earthy colours, and hints of the homeland. Braza is for family and friends and perfect for sharing a meal with loved ones.

Behind Braza’s delightful dining experience are restaurateurs George and Fats Lazarides with George Nichas and Pedro da Sambento. Fats and the two Georges are the same geniuses who developed the runaway success that is the Ocean Basket franchise chain.

Today, Braza has restaurants all over the country, at Menlyn and Irene Village Mall in Pretoria, at Johannesburg’s Cedar Square, Cape Town’s Canal Walk, Witbank’s Highveld Mall, St Lucia, and in Bloemfontein. The newest Braza is at Emperors Palace, conveniently situated alongside OR Tambo International Airport.

A menu for all seasons

Braza’s signature dish has to be the numerous espetadas, such as the beef espetada, cubed tender rump, served with grilled vegetables and a choice of one side order, fries, rice, milho frito, murro potatoes or salad.  Other espetada variations include the flying rump espetada (cubed rump and chicken breast), the chicken espetada, the Braza espetada and a delicious starter espetada, bacon wrapped chicken livers, skewered and grilled to perfection!

Braza also offers an excellent range of starters, and main courses include a superb choice of flame-grilled meat: succulent rump steaks, T-bones, and chicken. Seafood offerings include magnificent Moçambique-style prawns, fish of the day, and a tempting dish of sardines served with murro potatoes and grilled peppers. The suite of desserts includes something to round off the perfect meal, and the list of wines and spirits is comprehensive, to say the least.

The Braza menu offers an extensive selection of meals, and to make decisions easier, Manuel has combined the best and created a delectable choice of platters.

These include the Braza’s Portuguese Platter, which is a plate of calamari, mussels, beef espetada and a dozen grilled prawns. And there is the equally hearty Ponta Platter, which includes calamari, a quarter piri-piri chicken, half ribs and six grilled prawns.

What’s more, the combination of choice, quality, price and ambience make for excellent value. No wonder diners linger at Braza’s tables for much longer than it takes to eat a delicious meal!

Braza’s website is worth lingering over, too, as it is informative and practical: www.braza.co.za.
