AUGUST
The countryside through our reader’s eyes and lenses. Here are this month’s four winning entries in our photographic competition.

FIRST PRIZE

Canon Powershot SX 120 IS digital camera valued at R3 000

As a photographer light is all you have got to work with to create a winning image. When a situation arises and you are presented with such superb lighting, the composition, correct exposure and aperture settings are all in the photographer’s hands. The tree at the bottom left of this picture provides the anchor point, and the strong diagonal on the right holds the picture together and demands your full attention.

 SECOND PRIZE

Canon Ixus 95 digital camera valued at R2 000

The critical point of this picture, of a cheetah in Thornybush Game Reserve, is the point of focus. Placing your point of focus on the animal will ensure that the focus is sharp on the main subject, and not on the vegetation in the foreground. Composition is great, with the animal looking into the picture. A diffused background, thanks to the small aperture of f5.6, adds impact.

Photographer Ryan Jack, Hoedspruit
Camera Canon 5D
Lens Canon 100-400mm
Settings None supplied

 THIRD PRIZE

Canon SELPHY CP 780 compact photo printer valued at R1 500

The sheer magnitude of the Rooikrantz Dam near King Williamstown has been well captured, with scale being provided by the old boathouse in the top left corner. Soft lighting provides excellent colour. Composition contains all the correct elements to make this a great picture.

Photographer Rodnick Biljon, King Williamstown
Camera Canon 350D
Lens 18-55mm
Settings 1/60 of a second at f11, ISO 200
Accessories Camera rested on bridge

FOURTH PRIZE

Canon A480 digital camera valued at R1 200

The late evening light has provided the magic of a sunset. The very low camera angle and the use of a super wide-angle lens has brought about the maximum effect obtainable with such a lens. Very good composition and colour. The angle of the outgoing tide leads the eye directly to the red glow in the skyline.

Photographer Roger Lee, Gordon’s Bay
Camera Nikon D200
Lens 10-20mm at 20mm
Settings 3 seconds at F16
Accessories Tripod
