Use your local library

Maybe it’s the internet, maybe books have got cheaper or maybe we are just way more isolated these days and don’t think about using public amenities if we’re not forced to, but my sense is that library use is a long way below where it should be. Municipal libraries in South Africa are actually pretty well maintained and resourced, and it seems a shame that we don’t celebrate them a bit more. Sure, there are books that you want to have on your shelf at home but most novels get read once and then spend the next 20 years taking up bookshelf space. Joining a library entails an annual fee of around R30, which is money well spent to free up shelf space and save the odd tree.
